The Lao Forestry Association (LAF) is committed to collaborating with communities, local organizations, and other stakeholders in the modern, systematic management and sustainable, environmentally sound utilization of natural resources. This is accomplished by examining existing resources and restoring forests and ecosystems to a certain standard, thereby making a rational contribution to a fair and equitable income-expenditure balance for all.

The forest serves three main functions: the utility function (wood, berries, mushrooms, hunting), the protection function (climate, water, soil protection, avalanche/erosion protection, air filtration, habitat for animals and plants), and the recreational function (recreational activities such as hiking, sports, mental relaxation), with all functions being legally anchored and having to be balanced against each other in the event of conflicts.

Utility function:

Wood: Obtaining lumber, pulpwood, and firewood.

Products: Collecting NTFP mushrooms, berries, herbs, and ornamental branches.

Hunting: Sustainable wildlife management and meat production.

Protection function:

Climate regulation: Stores CO2, releases oxygen, and balances temperature and wind.

Water protection: Retaining water, filtering it (groundwater formation), and protecting against flooding.

Soil conservation: Roots stabilize the soil, preventing erosion and landslides.

Protection from natural hazards: Holds back debris, rockfall, and avalanches.

Air purification: Filters pollutants and dust from the air.

Biotope and species protection: habitat and retreat for many animal and plant species.
